The female urinary system comprises of the kidneys, bladder, ureter, and urethra; with the main purpose of making urine and removing it from the body.
The female pelvic floor – made of muscles and connective tissue – also provides overall support to the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, vagina, rectum).
Common after pregnancy, childbirth and menopause
Women have a lifetime risk of >50% of getting a UTI
When the pelvic floor muscles are too weak or tight
Depending on the condition suspected, a urinalysis (lab analysis of a urine sample), cystoscopy (visualises the urethra and bladder), urodynamic testing (tests bladder function) or pelvic exam may be performed.
Depending on the diagnosis, medications or surgery may be recommended. In the case of urinary incontinence or pelvic floor weakness, certain pelvic floor exercises may also be recommended.
